Just announced by Mundell Music for Backstage at The Green Hotel in Kinross is an interesting band The Trouble Boys who will be appearing live on Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th March.

The Trouble Boys are the brainchild of world-renowned songwriter/singer, session player & ex-Rockpile and Pretenders guitarist Billy Bremner, Ducks Deluxe and Tyla Gang frontman & writer, Sean Tyla and saxophonist and founder of Sweden's premier rock & roll band, The Refreshments - Micke Finell. They needed Sweden's No.1 power house rhythm section, Nordic drumming legend, Ingemar Dunker and ex-Roxette bass maestro, Tommy Cassemar to make the outfit swing like a donkey's doo-dah. This isn't a fanciful, 'one-off' diversion but a driven, full-blown, long-term venture to which all members are totally committed. The evidence is clearly defined in their live performances.

With a veritable haul of silver and gold studio albums, & tours of the world between them, they are a class act by any standards & a whole lot of trouble when it come to rocking your socks off! Get checked out by your doctor before you go to see them.

Segway in The Scottish Highlands

I was touring around the west Highlands seeing some clients old and new and the great thing about doing this is you just learn so much more about what's available to the Scottish visitor. So whilst I know that old friend Laurence Young was doing plenty up near Ballachulish with the wonderful Dragon's Tooth Golf Course I wasn't aware of his involvement in developing Glencoe Activities.

We'll blog a lot more about Glencoe Activities over the next couple of months and keep you up to speed with all the things you can get up to in the area but after I left him I had a wee look onine at some of the activities available and I am now desperate to get my hands (and feet) onto one of his Segways. A Segway? Have a look at the video...

Laurence advised that it takes about five minutes to get over the strange sensation and balance but after that you're off and running. Well off and something if not quite running.

It looks awesome. So there you go a wee family break at The Balluchulish Hotel, a couple of nines on The Dragon's Tooth spectacularly located golf course and a session on a Segway.

Forth Bridge to Be Knighted Shocker

It's been announced today by the BBC that one of Scotland's most famous landmarks the Forth Bridge is to be knighted.

It is understood to be the first time a structure has been given such an honour, usually reserved for famous faces and extraordinary youngsters. The government said it was in recognition of the outstanding history of the 121-year-old rail bridge.

In an entirely unrelated announcement we understand from a BBC insider that former Royal Bank of Scotland boss Fred Goodwin has today had his Blue Peter badge removed. Mr Goodwin who was awarded the badge, ironically for painting a very pretty picture of another famous Scottish landmark, had it removed when it was discovered that the paint he'd used was not his after all.

The removal of a Blue Peter Badge is a highly unusual occurence and means that the holder will no longer have free access to a large number of Blue Peter Attractions.

Another Wee Dram from Victor...

This article is one of an occasional series of thoughts brought to you by Victor "Bagging" Brierley of Glasgow Whisky Tours. Imagine travelling 5.000 miles across the globe to drink the drink that you love, on its home patch. Imagine then finding out that this same iconic drink is ignored in most of the bars you visit and the majority of the people you speak to don't know much about it. This, dear friends, is the story of Scotch Whisky.

We're a wee country in the Northern and chilly parts of Europe but our National Drink is revered and there's a bottle of it in just about every bar in the World. So, how on earth did this come to be? It's a very good question and if you come looking for an answer to this in the majority of bars and licensed premises in Scotland, you'll not be finding an answer.

Sure, in the 'Aficionado' circuit which is 99% dominated by men of a certain age, you get LOADS of knowledge, lots of it a bit too anally retentive and some of it focusing on box-ticking and cataloguing. The sort of thing that only 50-something year old men are really good at. You'll also get 'Industry' knowledge but when this is combined with in-house fighting and a scenario where you can visit certain distilleries and be shown a map featuring only their portfolio of distilleries, ignoring all the rest in Scotland, it's easy to paint a pretty bland and depressing picture of Whisky on its home turf.

Of course, there are exemplars and people who do a marvellous job selling and preaching about The World's most iconic spirit drink but I know that when you go drinking in a Glasgow Whisky bar and the member of staff doesn't know the difference between a Single Malt and a Blend, you'd have to say, there's got to be room for improvement.

Whisky generates £109 per second for the British economy but over 90% of the whisky produced in Scotland is exported. You could argue that is most of it is consumed abroad, does it really matter about the piddly wee market of Scotland? After all, if you were a big brand with ever tightening budgets, would you really be anything other than mad to dedicate time at home, when there's billions of Chinese and Indians who simply love our National Drink and want to buy rather a lot of it?

Well yes, the domestic market is tiny, probably even shrinking at a time when exports rose 23% in 2010, so surely we're over emphasising its importance? The simple answer is it's IMPOSSIBLE to over emphasise the importance of Whisky in Scotland. For instance, imagine if the spiritual home of Johnnie Walker, the worlds bigging selling Scotch Whisky was in USA, or China or Dubai? They would have Johnnie Walker World, a theme park, probably open all year round and packed with pampered tourists spending lots of tourism dosh.

What do we have at the ACTUAL home of Johnnie Walker, which is in Speyside? Erm, it's not quite this. If you were being kind, you'd call it 'twee'. It's not designed to extract tourism dollars, it's sort of seen as a bit of an afterthought.

And this is where we need to change. There are nearly 100 distilleries in Scotland, owned by various Global entities and tiny independents but they don't talk and they don't tell you about the other distilleries. Some of the visitor centres are good, some a top drawer. Others are closed and incredibly, for some Iconic brands, they don't even exist.

If you combine this with thousands of bars in Scotland who know next to nothing about our National Drink but could tell you the provenance of every bottle of imported lager in their fridge, it's clear we need to change.

So, how do we do this? It's actually really simple. Training. I'll now declare my interest here as I have set up a Limited Company called The Whisky Ambassador which is going to try and do lots of things. It's a big 'ask' as a football pundit might say but we're simply looking at the Mantra: Drink Less, Drink Better. Instead of fobbing customers off with a generic 'malt of the month', we're wanting to get Scotland to upsell in the bars here. Give customers a reason to drink something better. For bar staff to do this, they need power, they need buy-in from management and they need unity and support from the dynamic but divided Scotch whisky producers. Above all, they need training.

If's easier to simply pour another vodka or direct a customer to their 'usual' blend which depressingly clog up the optics eyline of the majority of bars in Scotland. It's a bit tougher to enthuse and be proactive about our National drink and offer alternatives, because in the majority of bars, there ins't an alternative/ "Nobody drinks 18 year old malts, so we don't have them' is the stock (or should that be lack of stock) answer. Yeah yeah, I know Catch 22, chicken and egg...

I've run out of space in this blog but I'll be telling you more about The Whisky Ambassador and Drink Less, Drink Better. It's a great idea as our email in boxes are telling us but it's not really something we can do alone. Knowlege is power. We want to supply the knowledge, we need unity and forward thinking for people to invest in training, be a bit cleverer in marketing and really just talk to each other. Hopefully, as an Independent, not linked to any trade body or distillery owner, we'll be able to do this. We'll be rolling out The Whisky Ambassador brand in the next few weeks, so watch this space. Imagine a sort of star grading system. like Michelin has, where you can select the best places to enjoy a luxury dram and I'm not just talking about the handful of luxury hotels who do it well.

We want people to find the real gems and get a proper whisky experience here, not the apologetic, pathetic excuse for one that's generally on offer in Scotland, the home of Whisky. As any football pundit worth his salt might cliche, it's a bit of a no-brainer, Motty.

St Andrews Festival of Golf 28th March to 1st April

The St. Andrews Golf Festival, golf’s first-ever organised celebration, will take place between 28 March and 1 April in this historic town where golf has been played for over 600 years.

The creative Festival, which hopes to attract international visitors, has an impressive schedule of events, exhibitions, tours, lectures, films and skills competitions planned for the launch of this five-day extravaganza.

Top Marks for Old Loans Inn from Tam Cowan!

The team at the Old Loans Inn near Troon in Ayrshire can look forward to 2012 with a spring in their step after picking up “an unbeatable” top marks from Tam Cowan, Restaurant Critic of the Year, and are now in line to win the prestigious Hot Plate Award.

Cowan is the Daily Record’s award-winning restaurant critic and in 2011 he and three friends were blown away by their experience when they visited the SimpsInns venue in the village of Loans near Troon. As the review was published on New Year’s Eve it was a case of saving the best for last as the Old Loans Inn went to the top of an impressive shortlist vying for the Hot Plate Award.

“With an unbeatable score of 25/25, I can promise you it ticked all the right boxes,” said Cowan in reference to the only venue he awarded maximum points to in 2011. The Old Loans Inn moved above the likes of The Corinthian in Glasgow (24/25), Scotts Bar and Restaurant, Largs (24/25) and EE-USK in Oban (23/25).

“The food (comfort food at its very best) was sensational,” added Cowan. “The recession friendly prices (especially the £11.95 three-course menu that’s available 12-7pm seven days a week) were very welcome by the four of us enjoying the full works (plus wine and coffee) for £110.”

Cowan was taken, not only by the quality of food, but also by the service and ambiance of the family-owned business, which operates as part of the SimpsInns group based in the heart of Ayrshire. “Golf, frankincense and myrrh? Listen, at the risk of upsetting the Three Wise Men, the only gift I’ll be carrying next time I visit the Old Loans Inn will be a big shiny Hot Plate Award,” added Cowan.

Scottish Lamb Recipe from Fife

Looking for a wee recipe for something Scottish over the holidays?

Well how about trying the following receipe posted to us on facebook by The Inn at Lathones for Braised Lamb Shank. Now I know for a fact that only the very best local Scottish lamb is used at The Inn - provenance of their food being a big selling point - so see what you can pick up in your local butcher or if you must your supermarket!

Anyway here's the ingredients and method.

BRAISED LAMB SHANK
4 Fore Leg Lamb Shanks
250ml Red Wine
150ml Port
100g Tomato Puree
2 Bay Leafs
1 Sprig Rosemary
1 Sprig Thyme
6 Peppercorns
4 Juniper Berries
4 Gloves Garlic
2ltrs Good quality Beef Stock

Method:- In a large Pan brown outside of Lamb Shanks, add Peppercorns, Juniper Berries, Garlic and Herbs. Place Lamb Shanks in a large oven proof dish. De glaze frying pan by heating, add Tomato Puree heat for 1 min, add Red Wine and Port, stir then add to Lamb Shanks, add Beef Stock, cover and cook in Oven on 175oC for 3hrs.

Take out of Oven, remove Lamb Shanks, and cover with Tin Foil to keep warm. Place cooking liquid in pan, reduce by ¾ or more for a more intense flavour. Strain through a Sieve into a small Pot for serving with Rosemary and Garlic crushed Potatoes and seasonal Veg.

Whisky Stramash Looking For "AmDrammers"

Was just reading up some stuff earlier this morning on Creative Scotland 2102 - the press release that came in next was not realted to the project but strikes me as a great fun idea and in itself incredibly creative! Whisky isbig news again in the export markets and tying it in with tourism seems to be increasingly fashionable in the central belt (having been always fashionable in the Highlands!)

According to the press release on the Whisky Stramash website, "Aspirant actors and actresses from across the Central Belt are being invited to act in a ‘whodunnit’ murder mystery, as part of an exciting new event set to stir the whisky industry. Organisers of the Whisky Stramash, which takes place for the first time at Edinburgh’s Surgeons’ Hall on 26th & 27th May, are on the search for an amateur dramatics group to act out the gruesome game, which is being sponsored by Jura Single Malt Scotch Whisky."

The Whisky Stramash is explained on the site as being,

An affair to excite the purists, tempt the interested and intrigue the indifferent, enthusiasts of whisky from around the world will encounter many elements and experiences. Held in the historical Surgeons’ Hall, dram devotees will be exposed to a concoction of molecular experiments, murder mystery and an insight into the gruesome lives of barber surgeons.

Taking place on 26th and 27th May 2012, the Stramash aims to challenge the traditional “stuffy” whisky-associated events and promises to be full of mystery, entertainment, comicality and madcap pioneering, featuring chilling characters associated historically with the dram.

With regards to the amateur dramatics, colleges, universities and drama clubs from across the Central Belt are invited to audition and compete against other groups across the country for the chance to take part and win £1,000 cash prize. The winning group will be invited to the event to act out dramatic death scenes, plotting along the way and leaving clues to grip the unsuspecting audience, before helping to uncover the cunning culprit.

Auditionees are asked to send a three-minute video clip of their best performance to sarah@threebrandpr.com and videos will be uploaded onto a dedicated YouTube site, before the Whisky Stramash organisers narrow the entrants down to their favourite three. These three will be invited to audition in front of the judging panel at a location in Edinburgh, before the winner is announced and invited to perform at the event in May 2012.

Scottish Rugby Moves The Goalposts to Glasgow

Scottish Rugby has announced that the world famous HSBC Sevens World Series is heading for Glasgow in 2012.

The event, seen in more than 140 countries worldwide and with a following of over 200 million, will be held at Scotstoun Stadium on the weekend of 5 and 6 of May in 2012.

According to the press release "The move of the event from its traditional home in Edinburgh will give the people of Glasgow a chance to savour the unique festival atmosphere that a sevens tournament of this size and scale can deliver." Edinburgh losing a rugby event to Glasgow! The establishment must be rocking!

Anyway, it puts Glasgow on the international circuit of sevens which also takes in Hong Kong, Dubai and Australia’s Gold Coast and the First Minister was rolled out with his quote too,

“Scotland is well known as the home of rugby sevens and it will be tremendous to see this global spectacular staged in Glasgow. It is a city that knows how to put on a show and I have no doubt that come May, the people of Glasgow will take great pride in staging another major international event.

“I’m very pleased that we are part of the launch today and we look forward to working with Scottish Rugby and all those involved in making the event a world-wide success.”

Present at the launch, IRB Vice Chairman Bill Beaumont said: “Scotland is the home of Sevens and today’s announcement represents a further boost for the sport as we count down to the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and Rugby’s return to the Olympic Games stage in Rio in 2016.”

“We are confident that the Scottish Rugby Union’s commitment to deliver a spectacular round of the HSBC Sevens World Series in Glasgow in 2012 and 2013 will be a huge success and engage new fans throughout Glasgow, across Scotland and from further afield.”

Scotstoun Stadium, soon to be home to the Glasgow Warriors rugby team, will see 16 teams from across the world competing and 15,000 fans descend on the site each day for the penultimate leg of the World Series.

The stadium will see two temporary stands built to take the capacity to three times it's current level. In keeping with the atmosphere of the unique global tournament there will be live entertainment, a food court and the event will be licensed. It will be the first time a sevens tournament of this scale has been played in Glasgow.

Tickets for the event are on sale now at the price of just £10 for those who buy before the end of the RBS 6 Nations (17 March). All concessions are at half the equivalent adult price. Tickets will be sold for particular stands and designated days, with two-day ‘weekend’ tickets also available.

AC/DC - Scotland's Family Jewels Exhibition

Been following an interesting discussion on music tourism to Scotland and how it may not be exploited fully enough.

Regardless of how it's viewed music plays a massive part of the majority of our lives in triggering emotional responses and whether Scotland has failed to exploit it is questionable.

Events such as the Edinburgh Festival, Celtic Connections and other smaller festivals have always waved the flag for Scotland as a destination. The old Apollo in Glasgow was a must play venue for every self respecting rock artist and we were always quick to exploit the festival scene - I remember Runrig playing on the banks of Loch Lomond in 1991 I think.

T in the Park and events such as RockNess have only cemented Scotland's musical relationship with large scale events.

On the micro music scale we are delighted to have been involved more recently with Mundell Music based in Kinross in developing marketing activity to promote their wonderful venues at The Inn at Lathones near St Andrews, Backstage at The Green Hotel (Kinross) and most recently Ducks at Kilspindie.

The list of artistes performing for Mundell Music is truly breathtaking and it is in the area of developing regular live music at this scale that the challenge exists. This is where the unexploited opportunity exists. We've just developed a great new project for him - his very own SiteBuilder Bands - which is a template based website project allowing his artistes to upgrade their online presence from their clunky old MySpace presence to a site that incorporates their own Content Management and integrates their social media presence into the website. Delighted just to have put Benny Gallagher's site live. What a wonderfully way to start a new website project.

Anyway if you need to see the link between music and tourism have a look - or better visit - the AC/DC Scotland's Family Jewels exhibition at The Kelvingrove Gallery in Glasgow. For those of us old enough to remember them back at the Apollo in Glasgow it's a fantastic couple of hours escape featuring a superb collection of memorabilia and telling a great story along the way. The exhibition also highlights the band's strong connections with Glasgow and Scotland.

We always like to be a little different so why not promote golf when everyone else's mind is on skiing!

Well it's never too early to be thinking about your next golfing vacation or short break and new ideas are always good. So we were delighted when we got a link through from an old golf industry friend David Whyte whose Go Golf TV company produces promotional pieces for golf courses.

It just so happened we were putting out a mail shot for the hotel at the same time so it worked out pretty neatly.

West Highlands Fishing at Tomdoun

On a recent wee drive around bits of the West Highlands I took a brief detour off the A87 en route to Inverness from Fort William to spend a night at the wonderful sporting estate of Tomdoun Hotel.

I arrived in autumnal darkness and it made the expectation of arrival all the sharper. I checked in had a wee drink in the bar in front of the log fire and I couldn't help it; even although I was working I relaxed!

Checked into my room after a wee bottle of a Cairngorm Brewery beer to a magnificent King Size (plus) bed and deep deep bath and headed down to dinner with owner Mike.

Over dinner he explained the plans for the fishing market over the coming year with the purchase of a new multi seater landrover which will allow the accommodation of groups of fishing clients to enjoy more of the camaraderie. Being a townie and knowing nothing about fishing and stalking Mike explained a little more for me,
He pointed out the unique nature of Tomdoun, "It's not often that you find some of the best fishing, walking and stalking opportunities in the same location, even if you are not experienced you can learn to either stalk or fish here at Tomdoun. Many of our fishermen, walkers and stalkers have been coming here every year to enjoy a refreshing break with their favourite activities. It's the lure of the location that keeps bringing them back time and again."

"For fishermen there is approximately 25,000 acres of water including our own river the Upper Garry and Lochs Garry, Inchlaggan, Poulary, Loyne and Quoich where the guest can fish from our own boats or from the bank. And as far as stalkers are concerned, the estates of West Glenquoich and Barrisdale are legendary."

It's for this reason that Mike and his small team are looking to market their fishing credentials further.

Mike continued,
"You could try the small mountain lochans like Nan Breac or Staic, where a small 8ft 4# rod will suffice to catch sparkling wild brown trout up to two pounds on small traditional flies. Or the tumbling reaches and large pools of the upper Garry river, where a rod with a little more beef , 9ft 6ins 6# or even a 10ft 7#, may be needed for the longer casts for the heavier brown trout - last year a 11½lb came to the fly.Later in the year, break out your salmon rod and try for the late silver tourists the river can produce in the autumn to Alie’s Shrimp or Teal Blue & Silver.

The more leisurely angler may prefer a day on Loch Quoich, Loch Lochy or Loch Garry in a boat to drift with a team of three flies traditional loch style for Brown Trout or be a little more adventurous and try dapping for the bigger fish.Speaking of bigger fish our lochs are renowned for their Ferox trout so why not take out a boat and troll for these monsters of the deep with spoons and Rapalas - you could be rewarded with trout up to 18lb.The pike fisherman is also well catered for. You’ll find an abundance of hard fighting, well fed specimens in Loch Lochy with fish to 35lb. Loch Garry fish go to 20lb and Loch Loyne to 25lb. These fish will take dead baits, spinners and lures, either from the bank or boat."

Now I was lost and he could see that from my nodding head, "Tomdoun's great for the experienced fisherman but we're more than qualified to introduce the novice to the joys of the outdoors. We can tailor packages and events for any and all on the estate."

The conversation about the unique location and the benefits Mike outlined only really came into full understanding the next morning when I awoke to the view across the loch surrounded by hills. The beauty of arriving in the dark was that my sunrise vista was entirely unknown to me.

It is stunning and I can heartily recommend the Scottish breakfast too.

Skerryvore Live Act of the Year

One of the unexpected musical highlights of this year was during a wee trip to Dundee with the family. We were actually there to watch the good old Ayrshire Kille get hammered by Dundee United but that's a by product.

The aforementioned bonus was finding out that "bagrock" band Skerryvore were playing in the city and a quick call and we were off to see them play.

I think the kids were initially less than overwhelmed at the prospect but went along with the idea and we headed over to the Arts Centre in the city. Turns out it's a great wee venue with a fantastic bar and a tidy auditorium.

And Skerryvore?

Well I'd seen them before playing a set for us at the Golf Tourism Awards at Turnberry a couple of years earlier but in front of the more receptive audience they were excellent and totally won over the kids too - son even spending his pocket money on a T-shirt!

So we were delighted to hear that they won a gong in theTrad Awards winning 'Live Act of the Year' on Saturday at the awards ceremony in Perth.

The event was filmed for BBC Alba and shown on monday night with a short live Skerryvore set as part of the show. You can watch it HERE on the BBC iplayer if you wish but be warned some of Gaelic and it will probably only be available in the UK and for a short preiod of time. But it's a pretty good piece of TV and worth a look.

The five-star Fairmont St Andrews resort has cemented its position as a leading golf destination by being voted the International Association of Golf Tour Operators’ (IAGTO) European Golf Resort of the Year 2012.

The award is one of the most prestigious available to golf resorts, having recognised the quality of its facilities and service and been voted for by IAGTO’s 400 plus specialist golf tour operators in 58 different countries.

Fife has been named as the “Golf Destination of the Year – Europe, 2012” at The International Association of Golf Tour Operators Awards in Turkey last night (17th November). The Awards recognise exceptional contributions to the world of golf travel.

Stephen Owen, General Manager of Rufflets, St Andrews and member of the Fife Tourism Partnership was in Turkey with six Fife golf businesses to receive the Award. He said, ”This is a prestigious award for Fife – not only because it places Fife firmly on the international “green” as a fantastic place to visit and play golf, but also because it brings such important economic benefits to the area, too. It is an honour to accept the award on behalf of everyone in Fife involved with golf tourism and I am delighted to do so in the company of such excellent ambassador businesses from Fife, the home of Golf.”

Scotland's For Scarlettt....

Seems that Scotland has really turned around the movie location issue with Batman 3, World War Z and last week's announcement of James Bond's SkyFall now being followed up by the news that Scarlett Johansson film Under the Skin heads north to Glencoe for filming this week.

According to BBC Scotland, scenes for a new film starring Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson are set to be shot at locations in the Highlands.

Under the Skin is based on a novel of the same name by Michel Faber, who lives in the Black Isle north of Inverness and is about an alien who picks up hitchhikers on the A9 road in the Highlands for spare body parts. Clearly based on real life then!

A Transport Scotland spokesman said that the A82 south of Loch Ba would be closed for 10 minute periods on Wednesday and Thursday, "Following discussions with the filming company Saltfilm, our operating company Scotland Transerv and the police, we have granted an order giving permission to carry out filming for the film Under the Skin on the A82.

"The Scottish government welcomes the continued interest in Scotland as a filming location and we are confident that any disruption to drivers will be minimal."

Scotland Euro Qualifiers

We still can't shake our auld allegiance to all things Tartan Army so we thought this was as good a place as any to promote that there are still some spaces available for Scotland's crucial forthcoming double header against Liechtenstein and Spain with Passport Travel.

Of course it's great that Scotland has so many wonderfully busy rock festivals and we're sure that Rock Ness will be the traditional success again this weekend that it has always been but if thousands of bodies writhing around in mud is not (always) your scene then there are still wonderfully eclectic venues across Scotland with some surprisingly powerful live lists over the summer.

You could do worse for instance in looking at The Inn at Lathones near St Andrews in Fife.

A Trip Around Holyrood Abbey Edinburgh

Bit of a coincidence that I was chatting to The Royal Yacht Brittania's Chief Executive Bob Downie at a tourism event this week about the value of Royal Tourism when one of Visitscotland's regular newsletters dropped into my inbox featuring their attraction of the week - Holyrood Palace.

Couple of things jumped out at me was the realisation (and perhaps the political juxtaposition too!) of the importance of the Royal Family to Scottish tourism and how it has never jumped out at me as something that is very heavily promoted in Edinburgh. Scottish history for sure but the UK stuff just seems to happen. Anyway that was the less important lesson learned. What I did not know but should have is that the video that is embedded on the VisitScotland page about Holyrood and seen below is from the Royal Channel complete with the wee By Appointment logo!!

So I'm going to trawl through the Royal Channel and over the next few weeks compile a wee list of Scottish related videos that may be of interest to visitors and tourism providers alike. Embedding Royal videos on your site? May not get a knighthood but a couple of extra bed nights or visitors would be helpful. I think we may even get in touch with the team at The Royal Yacht and create a special Scotland's For Me Royal Edinburgh page!

Harry Potter Train Journeys from Fort William!

Whilst we're in the Fort William area highlighting the Mountain Bike World Cup we thought it worth mentioning a couple of other things in the area indclduing the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of Harry Potter.

Movies have always played a key part in promoting a destination and you can jump on the same route used by the Hogwarts Express.

West Coast Railways, operators of ‘The Jacobite’, provided the steam engine and carriages for the 'Hogwarts Express' as seen in the 'Harry Potter' films including ‘The Philosopher’s Stone’ and others in this wonderful series of films.

Some of the carriages of ‘The Jacobite’ are those used in the ‘Harry Potter’ films. So, you can take the kids and travel to Mallaig along the line used in the films, see the famous Glenfinnan viaduct, an unmistakeable landmark for all Harry Potter fans. It’s a great day out for all the family.

Dundonald Games Links Golf Day Announced

This year will see the inaugural Dundonald Games Links Golf Day incorporating the first Kilted Golf Classic teeing off on Friday 5th August.

This unique 18 hole handicap stableford event is open to amateur ladies and gents with an official handicap and will be played over the magnificent Dundonald Links golf course. The Highland Chocolatier was announced as the recipient of VisitScotland’s Food Tourism Award at last night's Scotland Food & Drink Excellence Awards in Dunblane.

Based in Grandtully in Perthshire, The Highland Chocolatier is a chocolate maker with a dedicated chocolate exhibition. The business was praised for its continuous growth over the past 5 years and its innovative expansion to provide a well rounded and year round visitor experience. Above all, the judges were impressed by the obvious passion and quality of the chocolate produced.

Scottish Seniors Open Returns to Fife

The Cleveland Golf / Srixon Scottish Senior Open will return to Fairmont St Andrews for a third consecutive year from August 19-21, when former Ryder Cup player Barry Lane will defend his title.

Lane captured his maiden European Senior Tour title over the Torrance Course last year, completing a Scottish double 22 years after also winning his first of five European Tour titles in the land where golf was born in the 1988 Scottish Open.

The 50 year old Englishman finished four strokes clear of compatriots Jim Rhodes and Glenn Ralph, the 2009 champion, to win on just his fourth appearance as a senior golfer.

With both The Open Championship and The Senior Open Championship being played in the south of England this summer, the Cleveland Golf / Srixon Scottish Senior Open will be one of the premiere fixtures on the Scottish golfing calendar.

The 19th edition of the prestigious event sees leading golf manufacturer Cleveland Golf/Srixon return as title sponsor for a third consecutive year, extending their association with the Senior Tour with Cleveland Golf already the Official Club of the Senior Tour, and Srixon, the Official Ball Supplier to the Senior Tour.

According to our very favourite online news website For Argyll - and it is worth reading some of the opinion pieces that they write - Ailsa Craig, or Paddy’s Milestone as it's always been known to us as kids, the unforgettable iconic shape seen from many of the golf courses of Scotland's West Coast Golf Links and seen by millions of TV viewers when the Open is held at Turnberry is up for sale!

Owned by the 8th Marquess of Ailsa, it is being sold by Knight Frank and by Vladi Private Islands, the agent who sold Sanda Island off the east coast of the Mull of Kintyre and who is currently also selling Barcaldine Castle in North Argyll as ‘an island-like property’.

Ailsa Craig is not even yet on the Vladi website, but the 245 acre rock with its distinctive conical shape, lying ten miles off Girvan on the south Ayrshire coast has an asking price of £2.5 million.

Discounted early-bird tickets for the Scottish Open at Castle Stuart, which will run from July 7 to 10, are available until April 10.

Adult open day tickets cost £25, or £15 for the over-60s.
Prices will rise to £30 and £20 respectively for tickets purchased on the day.
Tickets for the full tournament, including the practice and pro-am day, on July 6, can be purchased now for £55, increasing to £75 at the gate.
The same tickets are available for over-60s for £35 or £60 on the gate.
Tickets for the practice day only cost £6 now or £10 on the day.

This year’s tournament has attracted players at the top of their game, including Scotland’s golf champions Martin Laird and Aberdonian Paul Lawrie. The 2010 US Open champion, Graeme McDowell, and last year’s Scottish Open winner, Edoardo Molinari, are also due to take part. Organisers have not ruled out the possibility of an appearance from arguably the best-known player in the world, Tiger Woods, who usually plays in Ireland during the week of the Scottish Open, in preparation for the British Open a week later.

Aberdeenshire village Pennan, made famous thanks to Bill Forsyth’s 1983 hit film Local Hero, and its neighbouring Crovie are just two areas flagged up by the Banffshire Coast Tourism Partnership as being ringtone and message alert-free.

Zillah Jamieson, group director, said: “Many tourist organisations regard poor or non-existent mobile communications as a distinct disadvantage but we believe it can work in our favour.

“We’re Scotland’s ‘dolphin coast’, an area of outstanding beauty and tranquility. Dolphin spotting and wildlife watching need time and concentration. Imagine your first sighting of a family of dolphins being interrupted by your ringtone. Getting away from it all should mean exactly that – leaving the mobile and the PC switched off.”

As well as Crovie and Pennan, which has its iconic red phone box for emergency calls, the partnership says the historic harbours at Portsoy and Gardenstown also provide patchy mobile signals at best.

Seatown in Cullen is another area flagged up where tourists can escape the buzzing and beeping.

Mrs Jamieson added: “The Banffshire coastline is dramatic, breathtaking but very accessible and safe. It is one of the best places in Europe for watching cetaceans, a group which includes dolphins, whales and porpoises.”

In the interest of balance, Mrs Jamieson said the Banffshire Coast Tourism Partnership was “equally happy” to point visitors in the direction of places which provide excellent mobile phone coverage.

Kingsbarns Golf Links set to reopen on April 1 for 2011 season

Kingsbarns Golf Links is looking forward to its second decade in operation after a successful 10th anniversary season in 2010.

Having celebrated the anniversary last year by staging qualifying for the Open Championship the highly rated links in the East Neuk of Fife saw more than 27,000 rounds played throughout the season.

The main focus of the green keeping team, led by Course Manager Innes Knight, was to continue improvements to all playing surfaces. In 2010, with the help of 'state of the art' fairway cutting machinery and the addition of an extra patching team, the maintenance team were able to work ahead of daily play unnoticed. This winter's maintenance included work to augment the existing fairway drainage system by improving certain areas which have been affected in the past by torrential downpours. Maintenance has also included work such as bunker revetting, tee and walkway alterations and coastal defence improvements.

The green keeping team work closely with the Sports Turf Research Institute, the leading independent turf care body, to monitor the quality of the greens. The STRI uses highly advanced turf quality measuring equipment on the playing surfaces to help Innes and his team consistently achieve traditional links conditions and true running surfaces.

"The course performed very well in 2010," said Innes. "The Final Qualifying for the Open in June and the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at the beginning of October were our biggest events of the year and we received very favourable feedback from both tournaments. We have been very busy over the last few months working hard to lay the foundations for a successful start to the 2011 season."

Improvements have also been made to the facilities for golfers including the upstairs locker room, 1st tee starters hut and to the half-way house. The half-way house has undergone a makeover and will continue to sell a selection of chilled beers, hot or cold drinks and snacks, along with its world famous hotdogs.

The green fee at Kingsbarns for next season is £185 with a 50% discount for golfers playing a second round within seven days.

Clare Johnson and David Wilson used to own The Anchorage Seafood Restaurant in Tarbert but ready for a new challenge, in Spring 2005 they bought the Kilberry Inn. Five years on they have entertained world famous opera singers and flamenco guitarists and had cosmopolitan journalists hopping with excitement. There are unconfirmed reports that the Queen dined here during her 80th Birthday cruise and a drawing of the Inn by regular Peter Howson is on the wall beside the fire.

Clare beat the Hairy Bikers, Si King and Dave Myers in a cook off when they visited the Inn to film part of their BBC2 series "Food tour of Great Britain". Her recipe is also featured in their cookery book. This year, for the first time, the huge contribution of Scots and Scotland to the founding of North America will be celebrated across the whole of Canada and the USA on Tartan Day, April 6th.

The decision by the Federal Government of Canada to officially recognise Tartan Day will add fresh momentum to Scotland Week 2011.

From April 3, 2011, Scotland's Minister for Enterprise, Energy and Tourism, Jim Mather, and representatives of Scottish Development International and VisitScotland will carry out an intensive Scotland Week programme of business meetings and other engagements to build on existing links and promote Scotland as an internationally competitive and innovative business location. Deputy Presiding Officer Alasdair Morgan will represent the Scottish Parliament and take part in a number of Scotland Week activities.

This year the Scotland Week programme will include engagements in eight cities across North America, including the Canadian cities of Calgary, Ottawa and Toronto, and will include private business meetings with potential investors, trade events and networking opportunities. Other events will include the annual celebration of Tartan Day on April 6, the Scotland Run, now in its eighth year; and theatre performances of Black Watch by the National Theatre of Scotland in Chicago, and The Promise by Random Accomplice, in New York.

Carnoustie to Host Women's British Open Golf 2011

The 2011 Ricoh Women’s British Open is all set for another memorable championship when it makes its first appearance at one of the most famous and difficult links courses in the UK, providing a stern test for reigning champion Yani Tseng, past Birkdale champions Catriona Matthew and Laura Davies and the rest of the world’s best female golfers.

Having previously hosted The Open Championship on seven occasions, the 2010 Senior Open Championship and being one of the three courses hosting the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship on the European Tour, Carnoustie is no stranger to the biggest golfing events.

The Ricoh Women’s British Open is one of the most exciting Majors in golf. As the only women’s Major played outside the US it is the most international with the 2010 field boasting players from 22 different nations and included every player inside the world’s top 20.

Carnoustie enjoys a well-deserved reputation as being among the best and most challenging golf courses in the world. It is considered by many to be the most difficult course in the Open rota, and one of the toughest courses in the world. It’s a historic venue that provides a very unsympathetic test of the abilities of any golfer, as well as boasting one of the greatest back nines in championship golf.

The Scottish club is a fitting stage on which to perform for the world’s leading players. Golf was first recorded as having been played at Carnoustie in the early 16th century and the club first played host to The Open Championship in 1931. Some of the most dramatic moments in golf have taken place at the links course including the famous 1999 Open Championship that is best remembered for the epic collapse of French golfer Jean Van de Velde. Van de Velde needed only a double-bogey six on the 72nd hole to win the Open but he proceeded to shoot a triple-bogey seven, tying Paul Lawrie and 1997 champion Justin Leonard at 290, at six over par. Lawrie won the playoff and the championship and Van de Velde won a place in sports infamy.

The seventh and most recent time The Open Championship was contested at Carnoustie was in July 2007. Irishman Padraig Harrington claimed his first Major with a one shot victory in a dramatic and exciting finish ending on the 18th in a four-hole playoff with Spaniard, Sergio Garcia.

A new chapter is ready to be added as Carnoustie gears up to host its inaugural Ricoh Women’s British Open. Gordon Murray, Chairman - Carnoustie Links Management said “We are thrilled to be hosting the 2011 Ricoh Women’s British Open. This event has grown in stature year on year and we have been very keen to get Carnoustie on the rota.” World No 11 Paula Creamer who picked up her first Major win at the 2010 US Women’s Open has commented “Carnoustie will be quite daunting I’m already looking forward to the challenge.”

This year’s tournament will see 2010 champion Yani Tseng return to defend her title but the Taiwanese star will face stiff competition from many fellow professionals including Japan’s Ai Miyazato and the 2009 champion Catriona Matthew. Americans Michele Wie and Natalie Gulbis, will all have their eyes on the trophy, seeking their first Major win at this year’s Championship.

Well you could do a lot worse than the Fife coast and to boot one of its top golf courses, Kingsbarns, have decided to open their course for an additional two weeks at the end of the year. It's quite unbelievably celebrating its tenth anniversary and was recently ranked 15th in the Golf World Top 100,

The course will now stay open until November 14 to accommodate increased demand from visiting golfers.

Muirfield has hosted the Open Championship on no fewer than 15 occasions, the last of which was back in 2002 when South African Ernie Els lifted the Claret Jug and will be Scotland’s next Open Championship venue in 2013.

Prestwick of course lays claim to the birthplace of the Open Championship, having staged the first ever event back in 1860. Archerfield to Host Hickory Golf Event

According to Martin Dempster in The Scotsman Archerfield Links has been added to the venues for this year's World Hickory Open in East Lothian.

It will stage the event, being supported for the first time by the Scottish Golf Union, along with Musselburgh Old Links, Craigielaw and Gullane No.2 & No.3.

"The new course selection, the rapidly growing popularity of the hickory game and the presence of at least three National Hickory Champions, is assurance that this year's Open will attract a record field," said tournament chief Lionel Freedman.

"This tournament is for professionals and amateurs alike, which adds another unique dimension to the event."

The event takes place on 20-24 September and early entries include current national hickory champions, Mike Stevens from the United States, Owe Werner from Sweden, Perry Somers from Australia, Ian Forrester from Holland and Marc Amort from Schloss Langenstein in Germany.

"It provides a great opportunity to take a step back in time and see how golf was played prior to modern technology," said Hamish Grey, Chief Executive of the Scottish Golf Union. "I'm sure it will be a great occasion for hickory fans from Scotland and all over the world."

Edinburgh to Oban By Train

ScotRail is to launch a Sunday train service for day trippers from Sunday 25th of July to Oban from Edinburgh, Linlithgow and Polmont over six weeks this summer and run each Sunday until 29 August inclusive.

The service is timed to give passengers five hours in the West Highland town and designed to appeal to people in Edinburgh and West Lothian who would love a day out in Oban – without taking the car.

The train will leave Edinburgh Waverley at 0810 and arrive back in the capital at 2107.

Graeme MacFarlane, marketing manager at ScotRail said that the move was in direct response to listening to customers – as well as people opting to holiday in the UK due to ongoing uncertainty regarding air travel.

He added: “Many customers in the East of Scotland have told us they would love to experience the West Highland Line for a day out but would prefer not to change trains – and sometimes stations – at Glasgow.

“This new, direct service changes all that and should boost tourism. And we’ll be offering cream teas on the scenic route, which really is the icing on the cake of a special day out!”

David Adams McGilp, VisitScotland’s Regional Director in Argyll said: “We’ve just launched a £250,000 campaign specifically encouraging Scots to take holidays in their own country, so expanding train services to accommodate the needs of the day trip market fits very well with this. There are lots of things to do within walking distance of Oban station for families and individuals alike, not least taking in the panoramic views from McCaig's Folly, the open air platform on top of the hill behind Oban.”

Really liked this wee campaign from Caledonian Macbrayne who have just launched a fleet of CalMac branded taxis with the familiar livery and lion rampant brand on the streets of Glasgow!

Inside, seats are fitted with adverts featuring inspirational views of the islands we sail to, with rear window stickers adding a quirky finish.

Novelist Iain Banks is to give a preview of his new, unpublished science fiction book at the most northerly literary festival in mainland UK.

Other guests announced for the Ullapool Book Festival in May include writers Ann Donovan and Kevin MacNeil. Banks' best known work includes The Wasp Factory, while his science fiction include Matter and Transition. A Day (and Night) at The Races!

Looking for a short break with a difference? You could do worse than enjoy an overnight stay in Ayrshire ahead of a Day at Ayr Racecourse, Scotland's premier horseracing track.

The feature race of the afternoon is a two mile handicap chase at 4.55 pm and then the final race is off at 5.30 pm.After racing a disco will play in the Horseshoe Bar for approximately three hours. Cluny Celebrations in Scotland

With nearly 300 events taking place across Europe in the 12 months from September, 2009, Scotland can feel proud that its week-end of events has been ranked in the top 6 by the Federation of Cluniac Sites.

The Burgundy based organisation promotes the cultural, educational and touristic aspects of the network of Cluniac abbeys and priories spread across the continent.

Recognising the importance of Paisley and Crossraguel Abbeys (the farthest-flung from Cluny), the Mayor of Cluny, his Deputy and other civic dignitaries will visit Glasgow, Paisley and Crossraguel in May. They will enjoy a programme which consists of concerts, exhibitions, a conference and a Medieval Fair and a children’s bowling competition at Dundonald.

On Friday, 14th May the programme opens with a civic reception in Glasgow and a free concert by Canty, the 4-female voice ensemble from Cappella Nova. In the evening Renfrewshire’s Provost will host a civic reception in Paisley Abbey. In Paisley that day a special exhibition opens in the Museum tracing the impact the abbey had on medieval life in the town. Rooms are available to book online in Paisley at The Watermill in the town centre.

Saturday 15th sees the main events of a conference on the history and archaeology of Paisley and Crossraguel in Paisley Town Hall, while outside, a Medieval Fair will take place with various aspects of village life being portrayed by re-enactors. Inside the abbey will be activities for young children and youth with theatrical performers, an alchemist and calligrapher present.

In the afternoon the Franco-Swiss delegation will visit Crossraguel, the most complete Cluniac site in the UK. The abbey will be the subject of a £133,000 digital documentation project by a Cluny technical college and Historic Scotland. This will create 3-D images of how the abbey might have looked in its hey-day and provide a valuable tourism dossier for further developments.

Linking Paisley, Kelburn Castle, Dundonald Castle and Crossraguel will be coach tours starting at Paisley and Maybole. Historic re-enactors will be present at each site to entertain visitors. On Sunday, 16th May, a church service in Paisley Abbey will have the R.C. Bishop Tartaglia of Paisley as guest preacher.

New Golf Route Linking Prestwick and Argyll

Interesting article in the For Argyll website introducing Golf Links Express an offshoot of the award-winning Loch Lomond Seaplanes business which will offer golfers a 20 minute seaplane flight to some of Argyll’s spectacular golf courses from Prestwick International Airport.

As one with memories of the golf tourism potential of linking Ayrshire, Argyll and Antrim by ferry the new route is more than interesting. In the mid nineties Celtic Links developed packges in conjunction with Argyll and Antrim Steam Packet company which created three or four centre golf breaks with joined up sailings between Ballycastle and Campbeltown, Argyll and Arran, Arran and Ayrshire and Troon to Belfast with the old Seacat.

There is already a great wee service running between Ayrshire and Argyll by sea - The Kintyre Express - So the idea that these can be linked by air shows great promise for this niche golf market for sure.

David West, from Loch Lomond Seaplanes, puts the logic of the development and paints an enticing picture. He says: ‘Prestwick International Airport already welcomes tens of thousands of golfers every year but many rarely venture further than Ayrshire because of the travel time by road. Now they can access some of the best links courses in the world within minutes. Golf Links Express will be able to carry up to 10 golfers and their clubs from Prestwick to Islay in around 25 minutes, on to Machrihanish in 15 minutes then to Loch Lomond in another 25 minutes. That’s three fantastic locations across Scotland (and all in Argyll). Each would usually take a day’s travel to reach by car.

‘We’ve already had bookings from golfers as far a field as the US, Scandinavia and Ireland,” said David West, founder of both Loch Lomond Seaplanes and Golf Links Express’.

Jim Mather, Scottish Tourism Minister was quoted, ‘Having seen the setting up and launch of the Machrihanish Dunes resort I am delighted to see that the potential realised for expanding the golfing appeal of Kintyre and of Islay by providing an air ferry service based on Prestwick, another of Scotland’s golf attractions.

‘As David West of Loch Lomond Seaplanes has said, the new Machrihanish Dunes course and the historic Machrihanish Course are but a short hop of twenty minutes away from Prestwick. The beautiful Machrie course on Islay, known only to true aficionados, is less than ten minutes on and for those who really want to extend the golf experience there are superb courses accessible in Northern Ireland 25 minutes flying time from Kintyre. It will be obvious that this could set up a wonderful opportunity for golfers to mix and match and that all the courses could enjoy an increased footprint as a result.
